Starting your career is exciting, but it can feel daunting when you're looking for a workplace where you can be yourself.
This guide helps you explore LGBTQIA+ inclusive employers, understand your options, and make choices that feel right for you.
You don’t have to share your sexual orientation or gender identity in an application or at work – unless you want to. We’ll help you decide what works for you, and when.
What does LGBTQIA+ mean?
LGBTQIA+ includes a wide range of sexual orientations and gender identities:
- Lesbian
- Gay
- Bisexual
- Transgender
- Queer or Questioning
- Intersex
- Asexual or Aromantic
- + includes others outside these labels
Everyone’s experience is different. You don’t have to label yourself - what matters is that you feel respected and supported.

What to look for when researching employers
A good job fit isn’t just about the role – it’s about the environment. Before you apply for a job, you may want to check if the organisation has policies and a workplace culture that support LGBTQIA+ employees.
Look for signs that an organisation values diversity:

equal opportunities and diversity statements on their website

visible LGBTQIA+ employee networks or support groups

inclusion in schemes such as the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index

whether the employer has signed up to the Diversity Champions Programme

social media activity or public support for LGBTQIA+ events like Pride

Larger employers may have more visible diversity policies, but many smaller employers are also inclusive. Do not rule them out – it’s always worth checking their website or contacting them directly.
You don’t have to tell anyone – unless you want to
Application forms often have diversity questions, but you do not have to tell an employer about your sexual orientation or gender identity at any stage of recruitment or employment.
If you choose to share this information, do so when it feels right for you. You might decide to:

mention it in an application to show how you've developed skills like resilience or empathy

bring it up during the interview when discussing values, team dynamics, or personal motivation

wait until after you've started work
Stonewall research shows that inclusive workplaces help people feel more confident and perform better at work. You might also feel more comfortable being open if the organisation has clear policies and a supportive culture.
Skills like empathy, leadership and communication often develop from personal experiences. Positively sharing your story may show the value you bring to a team.

Some employers and events run events or insight days for LGBTQIA+ students and graduates. These opportunities are a great way to explore industries and meet supportive contacts.

Support organisations
Feeling supported makes a big difference.
Many larger employers have LGBTQIA+ staff networks. These are safe spaces to meet others, build confidence and raise visibility at work.
Unions also often have LGBTQIA+ support groups or resources, especially in public sector roles like education or healthcare.
