Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Guides

Advice on gaining equity in the recruitment process.

UK employers promote equal opportunities and diversity during recruitment and selection processes. They recognise and value the idea that employees from different backgrounds bring diverse knowledge, skills and experience to their organisation.

We provide guidance on a range of equality and diversity issues. Here you can find resources on identifying positive employers and understanding your rights during recruitment.

The Equality Act 2010

The Equality Act 2010 is UK legislation covering equality and diversity. It legally protects people from discrimination in the workplace and wider society. The Equality Act lists nine 'protected characteristics':

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage or civil partnership (in employment only)
  • Pregnancy or maternity
  • Race, including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin
  • Religion or belief, including lack of belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

Employers must treat applicants and employees equally in the workplace and throughout the recruitment process.
