Cultural diversity

Advice on religion, beliefs and your career.

Your religious, philosophical and cultural beliefs will shape you and may influence your career choices.

This guide can help you:

How your religious beliefs may impact your career

Your beliefs may influence the type of work you want to do and the organisations you feel comfortable working for. They might affect your working hours or days, for example, if you observe religious holidays or have set times for prayer.

You may also want to wear particular clothing or symbols of faith in the workplace. Your beliefs might mean you need flexibility around time off for religious events or practices.

Many employers value a diverse workforce. They recognise the skills, knowledge and different perspectives that people from a range of backgrounds bring.

Researching jobs and employers

You may want to learn how supportive an organisation is of people with different beliefs.

Look for information about:

  • an equal opportunities policy — does it mention religion and belief?
  • compliance with the Equality Act 2010
  • policies about religious observances — such as flexible leave, dress codes or fasting
  • staff diversity — do they employ people from a range of backgrounds?
  • facilities — is there a space for prayer or reflection?
  • staff networks — are there religious or faith-based groups?

Larger organisations often publish this information on their websites. Smaller employers may still have inclusive policies, but you might need to ask them directly.

What to tell employers

You do not have to tell an employer about your religion or beliefs. This information is usually only asked for on an anonymous equal opportunities form.

However, you may choose to tell an employer if:

  • you need time off for religious holidays or events

  • you need adjustments to practise your faith

  • you want them to understand how your beliefs shape your values and skills

You can share examples in an application or interview — for example, how your involvement in your faith community has helped you develop skills like teamwork, organisation or communication.

Where to find opportunities

Look for employers who:

  • have clear policies on diversity and inclusion

  • are members of diversity networks

  • advertise on specialist diversity job boards
