Ensuring the safety, satisfaction and success of all students and staff, irrespective of how they choose to define their gender identity.

The University of Portsmouth celebrates and values the diversity of its workforce and student body. We welcome people of all sexual and gender identities. We aim to create a positive working and learning environment in which all staff and students feel equally welcome and valued, and in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

The University is committed to preventing harassment and discrimination against trans and non-binary members of our community while also upholding our commitment to academic freedom and freedom of speech within the law. This balance ensures both the protection of individuals and the preservation of open academic discourse on complex topics.

This guidance includes information aimed at supporting individuals who intend to transition or are transitioning, including:

Within academic contexts, the University protects both the right to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of gender identity, and the right to engage in legitimate scholarly exploration of concepts related to sex and gender. The University distinguishes between behaviours targeting individuals, which may constitute harassment, and legitimate academic discourse on topics related to sex and gender identity.
