This article will provide information on how long to keep your child at home in the event they catch a contagious illness.

Chickenpox - Children will be excluded from Nursery until all the spots have crusted over.

Diarrhoea/vomiting - Children can return to Nursery 48-hours after the last episode of diarrhoea or vomiting.

Raised Temperature (above 37°c) - Children must not attend Nursery with a raised temperature.

Rashes - Children with rashes are considered infectious and need to be assessed by a medical practitioner . Children may return to Nursery if the medical practitioner agrees it is safe to do so.

Sticky eyes/conjunctivitis - Children with sticky eyes will be required to see a medical practitioner to get treatment. The child may return to Nursery with prescribed eye drops.

Hand, foot and mouth (small blisters in those areas) - Children with blisters need to be assessed by a medical practitioner. Exclusion is not usually necessary, unless the child feels unwell or is unable to eat or drink normally.

Head lice - If live lice are seen, the parent will be contacted, informed and advised to treat their child with the combing method or lotion that day. He/she may return to Nursery after treatment.

Antibiotics - A child cannot attend Nursery for the first 2 days of any course of antibiotics. Children may return to Nursery on the third day of the course of antibiotics, if they feel well enough. Staff can administer any remaining doses for the rest of the course while the child is at Nursery, with written parental permission, noting relevant details on dosage and times.
