Preparation
Data from existing devices should be backed up to cloud locations. This advice differs by device type:
Desktop PC
All data on standard university desktop PCs (on campus) is stored on your personal N drive. This includes files on the desktop, my documents, downloads etc.
This data will not have to be backed up but best practice is to store important files in more than one location e.g. Google drive
Laptops
Laptop users will need to be more discerning as all data is stored on the local hard drive and you will be responsible for backing these up before returning a device for replacement or reimaging. For software that has been configured specifically you may be able to export a configuration file, back it up and reimport it to the new device.
These files can be backed up to your N drive or the K drive. You can also use automated tools such as the Google drive app (start menu > Google Drive) to define files and folders to be backed up online.
This included bookmarks / passwords / extensions / personalisation
Every option involves creating and signing into an account. Personal data will automatically be backed up and will be restored when you sign back into your browser on the new device. Click below for official instructions:
Chrome | Firefox | Brave | Edge |
On your new device
Most software can be obtained from the AppsAnywhere portal.
For other software (Adobe creative suite, Microsoft 365) please visit our software page.
Any printers will need to be reconnected, please follow a guide below:
Printers have been reduced in favour of sustainability and print stations have been implemented in numerous buildings. Check here first for location and installation information.
