ESRI offer a range of Geographical Information System (GIS) services that staff and students at the University of Portsmouth have access to. The University has licensed these services for academic use only. The following software is available:
- ArcGIS Online is an external hosted online service that offers access to interactive mapping, data services, and more.
- ArcGIS Pro is a GIS desktop application.
- ESRI Training is a training platform for mapping, spatial analysis, and more.
Access to all services is granted through your University computer account login details.
ArcGIS Online
To log in to ArcGIS online use the button below and log in using your university credentials.
ArcGIS Pro (Windows only)
You need to be connected to the VPN to run ArcGIS Pro.
Downloading Pro
- Log in to ArcGIS using your University computer account login.
- Click on your name (top right).
- Select My Settings
- Select Licenses on the left hand side of the page.
- Scroll down until you see ArcGIS Pro and click Download.
- Run the installer.
Licensing Pro
Note: An internet connection is required to license ArcGIS Pro.
- Run ArcGIS Pro.
- When prompted for the license (first run) or when logging in (top right in Pro) tick sign me in automatically at the bottom of the window.
- Click on Your ArcGIS organization's URL.
- Enter portuni (tick to remember the URL).
- Click Continue.
- Click on University of Portsmouth.
- Use your University computer account login details.
Home installation is not supported by Information Services or the department/school staff, although staff will try to assist students where possible. For usage questions once installed, please contact department/school staff.
ArcGIS Desktop (legacy GIS)
ArcGIS Desktop has been superseded by ArcGIS Pro, you should aim to use ArcGIS Pro for your GIS needs. ArcGIS Desktop is available on AppsAnywhere. You will need to be connected to the VPN to be able to view and stream ArcGIS Pro.
ArcGIS for Desktop is available for home installation. There are a number of important points to note:
- ArcGIS for Desktop is only available on Windows.
- Home installation cannot be supported by Information Services or department/school staff. For usage questions once installed contact department/school staff.
- ESRI do not support academic users directly, all support is provided by department/school staff.
- You need to be connected to the VPN to run ArcGIS for Desktop.
- Read the form below carefully for additional information on home use.
Non-windows devices/low spec windows devices
You can use AppsAnywhere to remote into a lab computer in order to access GIS applications on those PC. For further instructions, click on the button below:

ESRI training
You can access ESRI training by logging in with your University computer account login details. Individual training courses are set by ESRI and availability of premium courses may be limited. You can access ESRI Training from the arcgis.port.ac.uk page.
- Log in to arcgis.port.ac.uk
- Click on your name (top right)
- Select Training

- Click on Your ArcGIS organization's URL.

Alternatives
QGIS
QGIS is free open source software (FOSS) GIS that can be streamed from AppsAnywhere or from the QGIS website. It matches the capability of most aspects of ArcGIS Pro and is available on Windows/macOS and Linux.
