From Saturday 19th March 2022, Google Apps Device Policy users will need to change to use Android Device Policy. Android Device Policy will create a Work Profile on your phone/tablet.

If you wish to access your work Google Account from a Smart device, you will be asked to install the Android Apps Device Policy application automatically when you add your work account. Android Device Policy enforces your organization’s security policies on your device to protect corporate data and make it more secure. For further information please view the Android Device Policy.

A full list of available options can be found here. This application mean you can remotely:

  • Reset your PIN
  • Ring Device
  • Lock Device
  • Locate your device
  • Wipe your device

Additionally, this application allows the University to:

  • Require that you have a PIN or password on your device.
  • Require a screen lock for idle timeout on your mobile device.
  • Wipe a lost or stolen device.


Change from Google Apps Device Policy to Android Device policy

Follow the steps below if you have received an email saying you need to change the way you access your work Google Account on your phone/tablet. After you have made these changes, your work Google account will have its own profile that means you can switch between using your personal and work profile on the same device in a secure way.

  • From the settings on your phone, open Accounts.
  • Select your work Google account e.g. joe.bloggs@port.ac.uk
  • Tap Remove account
  • Once the account has been removed, click Add Account then choose Google.
  • Sign in with your work Google Account details and follow the steps to create your work profile. Google Prompt will not work for 2-Step Verification so please choose an alternative option such as SMS, Authenticator App or physical security key when signing back in again. The Android Device Policy will install during this process.

 

Add your work Google Account to your Android device

Follow the steps below to add your work Google account to your Android device:

  • From the settings on your phone, open Accounts.
  • Click Add Account then choose Google.
  • Sign in with your work Google Account details and follow the steps to create your work profile. The Android Device Policy will install during this process.
