Moving from Google to Microsoft 365

Decorative image summarising the text already on this page regarding the move from Google to Microsoft. Key points are students are not required to do anything, the contents of their Google Drive will move to Microsoft Onedrive and their google email will be copied to Microsoft Outlook. In addition Microsoft Teams will replace Google for chat and video meetings.

Welcome to your new study toolkit. We’re moving to Microsoft 365 to give you a modern, integrated and industry-standard set of apps. Outlook, OneDrive, Teams and Copilot work seamlessly together so you can communicate, collaborate and stay organised in one connected space. This will equip you with essential digital skills, as these are widely used in the professional world.

Why this is good for you:
Work faster and stay connected with one sign-in for all your apps, built-in accessibility and security features, and valuable experience using tools employers rely on.

What about new students?

If you’re joining the University for the first time, you’ll use a Microsoft 365 account from day one for email (Outlook), storage (OneDrive) and communication (Teams). You’ll also have view/collaborate access to Google where needed for content that hasn’t moved yet. Remaining shared Google content will be reviewed and moved in a later phase this year.

What’s changing for continuing students?

We’re moving your email, calendar, contacts, chat, video calls and personal files from Google to Microsoft 365 so everything lives in one connected platform.

When is it happening?

Your migration will take place on the following dates:

Student migration dates by Faculty
Faculty / Group Migration date
Creative and Cultural Industries 2 September 2025
Business and Law 2 September 2025
Humanities and Social Sciences 3 September 2025
Science and Health 4 September 2025
Faculty of Technology 5 September 2025

Students on Pre-Sessional Courses 9 September 2025

We appreciate that some students may not be sure which Faculty they belong to, so we’ve emailed your Google Mail directly to confirm your exact date.

Please continue to use Google until you hear from us that your migration is complete.

You will receive an email in your Google Mail on your migration date to confirm that you’ll shortly be moved over to Outlook and OneDrive. Once this has happened, we’ll send a follow-up email to your new Outlook inbox with links on how to access your tools and the support available.

What you need to do

  • No action needed before migration; it happens automatically in the background.
  • Keep using Google as usual until you receive your confirmation email.
  • Your Google Drive documents will be copied to OneDrive in a folder named _MWP_Migration.
  • If you already use OneDrive or Outlook, you may see files appear early. Don’t edit or move them until we confirm your migration is complete.

Relax, we’ll take care of everything

Sit back and let us do the heavy lifting. We’ll copy your content, switch on your new tools and keep you updated. When it’s done, you’ll be ready to study with a faster, more connected Microsoft 365 experience.
