Access Moodle, the VPN and other University services securely with University MFA.

University Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra security check when you sign in to certain University services, including Moodle and the University VPN. It helps protect your account and information, even if someone else knows your password. In some cases, MFA is already set up for you using the personal email address you provided when applying to the University, however, you will need to have either the Google or Microsoft Authentication app on your phone in order to access all services.

 

Secure all your University accounts

The University uses three different security methods. Each protects different accounts and services, so setting up one does not automatically set up the others. To avoid problems accessing the systems you need for your studies, make sure you complete all three setups at the beginning of your studies or when prompted:

  • Set up University MFA for services including Moodle and the University VPN.
  • Microsoft MFA for Microsoft 365 services including Outlook, OneDrive and Teams.
  • Set up Google 2-Step Verification for your University Google account and files stored in Google Drive.

The prompts may look different because each method protects a separate account or service.

 

How University MFA works

University MFA is usually set up automatically, so there is nothing you need to do before using it. When you sign in to a University service that uses MFA, a one-time security code will be sent to the personal email address linked to your University account. This is normally the email address you provided when applying. Simply enter that code when prompted to complete your sign-in.

You can continue receiving codes by email, or connect University MFA to an authenticator app if you would prefer to generate them on your phone.

University MFA sends security codes to the personal email address linked to your student record. If you want to change the personal email address that receives your University MFA security codes, follow the steps below.

 

  1. Go to Student View, then sign in with your University email address and password.
  2. Select My Student View. You may be taken to your results page first.
  3. Under My Enrolment Tasks, select Maintain my Address Details.
  4. Update your personal email address.
  5. Select Continue to save your changes.

Your future University MFA security codes will be sent to your updated email address.

If you would prefer to generate your University MFA security codes on your phone instead of receiving them by email, you can connect the free Microsoft Authenticator app.

Authenticator apps create temporary security codes that you enter when prompted to complete your sign-in.

 

  1. Download and open Microsoft Authenticator on your phone.
  2. On a computer, go to secure.port.ac.uk.
  3. Sign in with your University username and password.
  4. Enter the security code sent to your personal email address.
  5. Select Add, then Use an authenticator app.
  6. Select Get QR code and keep the QR code open on your computer.
  7. In Microsoft Authenticator, select the plus (+) icon.
  8. Select Work or school account, then Scan QR code.
  9. Scan the QR code shown on your computer.

An account called NetIQ will appear in Microsoft Authenticator. When University MFA asks for a security code, enter the code shown under NetIQ.

You can download Microsoft Authenticator from your devices app store:

You can link Google Authenticator to University MFA if you would rather use an app than receive security codes by email. The app generates a temporary code on your phone, which you enter when prompted to complete your sign-in.

This only connects Google Authenticator to University MFA. It does not set up Google 2-Step Verification for your University Google account.
