A team of volunteers has been doorknocking fellow students in Southsea to help improve recycling and waste rates in the city.
Eight students received training from Portsmouth City Council about local waste and recycling schemes, so they can advise other students on how to recycle items.
Accompanied by Council staff, the volunteers doorknocked on student houses to remind students about recycling facilities and give out contact numbers if they have bulky waste items — such as beds and bookcases — in an effort to avoid waste accumulation on the streets.
The team first went out before Christmas 2021 and completed all targeted streets in the Somers Town and Fawcett Road areas. They’ll next head out in April to remind students to tidy up and not leave rubbish out on the street when they move out for the summer.
The student volunteers will receive a certificate and reference from Portsmouth City Council for giving up their time to take part in the scheme.
