Did you know that 2.5 billion coffee cups are used every year in the UK? And most coffee cups are lined with plastic to make them water tight.
To mark Plastic Free July, we’re celebrating the cafés in the city that are doing their bit to tackle single-use plastics by allowing you to take along your reusable cup — a simple step to help tackle the global plastics crisis. Some even offer you a discount if you bring your own cup.
Due to current Covid-19 precautions the situation may change, so it's worth checking directly with the business directly. Simply asking whether reusable cups are accepted will prompt businesses to consider their practices. It’s a form of taking action on plastics.

1. University campus cafés

All our Food on Campus venues offer a discount for using a reusable cup as part of our commitment to sustainability and reducing our use of plastics.

2. The Southsea Deli

The Southsea Deli happily accepts reusable cups in their shop on Elm Grove and at their seafront coffee truck at Eastney Beach. They do everything possible to avoid single use plastic and any disposable items are made from either cardboard or vegware. The deli even has a milk dispenser from a local dairy so you can buy a pint of milk in a plastic free container.

3. Hideout Coffee Co

Opposite St. Andrews Court in the University quarter is Hideout Coffee Co. Grab a coffee in your reusable cup and see if you can resist their mouth watering donuts.

5. Baffled Coffee

Baffled Coffee uses biodegradable bugasse food containers (made from sugarcane stalks) and Vegware cups for their takeaway smoothies and iced coffees. Take in the sea breeze at their beach kiosk near South Parade Pier or visit their café on Fawcett Road.

6. Southsea Beach Café

Southsea Beach Café runs an initiative where if you complete a short beach clean and fill a bucket with plastic litter, you'll be rewarded with a free hot drink or kids ice cream.

7. Milton Perk Coffee House

8. Broadway Coffee Roasters

Try a range of different flavours from Broadway Coffee Roasters on Highland Road. Better still, you'll receive a discount if you take a reusable cup.

9. 113 The Art Coffee House

With walls decked with artwork there's more to enjoy than just your hot drink at this café, located next to St Andrew's Court. 113 The Art Coffee House offers a 10% discount if you take a reusable cup.

We’re sure there are many more. If you know of a local business that's doing their bit to tackle plastic, let us know @UoPPlastics on Twitter and we’ll add them to our list throughout July.
