Raising aspirations for women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
My name is Hafsat and I am studying Biomedical Science.
I have always been interested in science. To be honest, since I was little I think I was already a small scientist. I learned about biomedical science when I was in my final year of high school and I knew that it was perfect for me. In the future career, I want to go into public health and development because I would really love to give back to my community with what I have learned.
The best thing about my course is the practical aspect, we actually get to see what we are learning – it is not all from books, we get to practise what we learned the week before. We culture bacteria, monitor fluid changes in the body to see how it can identify diseases – so many cool things!
I think more women should go into science careers because they will bring a different perspective and different ideas into the industry and generally I think that diversity increases the collective intelligence of the research group.
For women looking at entering the science industry say if you know that you want something, go for it, put your mind to it and let nothing stop you.
