Sing in a safe and enjoyable space within a large and welcoming ensemble

Did you know that our University of Portsmouth Choir meets in Eldon Building W1.11 at 5.30pm on Wednesdays and is open to everyone?

It is a non-auditioned group, which currently involves around 80 singers. It sings music ranging from pop songs (e.g. ‘Dance the Night’ from Barbie), through folk and world music numbers, to ‘great choral works’, such as Haydn’s Creation (scheduled for performance on 12 May 2024).

The choir has been led for the last 20 years by George Burrows, Professor of Music and Theatre. It gives at least three public concerts per year, often with a guest orchestra and top-calibre soloists, and has toured abroad and broadcast on BBC radio. As it is a university choir, many of its concerts are articulated with university research.

The emphasis is on access and learning through rehearsals, so there is no audition to join the choir and singers are very welcome to come and try out a rehearsal in Eldon W1.11 at 5.30pm on any Wednesday in February. Rehearsals run until 7.00pm.

All music is provided and you’ll get to sing in a safe and enjoyable space within a large and welcoming ensemble. Singing together has been shown to benefit your health and wellbeing, and is a great way to meet new people.
