We’ve invested over £1.5 million in new and improved IT equipment to give students the best access to the most up to date technology and software.
The new investments include upgrading 750 PCs, 200 Laptops and installing over 1,200 4K widescreen monitors, plus free access to Google Apps, Microsoft Office 365, Zoom, LinkedIn Learning, campus computers and laptops for loan.
4K Curved monitors - These next generation monitors enhance student comfort, increase productivity and efficiency, give far more screen space, and better visual quality. During 2023 we will investigate any remaining student PCs, especially in faculty labs to see if we can upgrade these.
BYOD Stations - Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) workstations are places that have a keyboard, mouse and large 4k curved monitor installed to allow students to bring their own laptops and plug in just like a PC. These provide students with shared workspaces, hot desking and agile workspace environments. These have been installed into Open Access areas and Uni Cafes. In 2023 we will look to increase BYOD workstations in targeted popular locations around campus.
Student Remote Desktop Access - During 2022 we increased the number of PCs students can remotely access from anywhere in the world, giving students the same experience as sitting at a PC here on campus. In 2023 we aim to have virtual desktops in the cloud to replace (and increase) this service so students can continue to access the services they need to study from anywhere.
Along with investment in new technology, the university has also invested in its technology infrastructure by completely reinstalling the Wi-Fi Wireless network in Harry Law Halls. Every room now has its own dedicated wireless access point, greatly increasing coverage, reliability and data speeds. UoP Guest network has been reviewed and is in progress of a complete redesign.
Future Developments
In 2023 we will trial new technology pods incorporating screens, specialist controllable lighting that assists with additional needs such as dyslexia/autism and wireless charging compatible with the latest tech
