Footpath closure on Winston Churchill Avenue

16 February 2024

A walking route for many students travelling between campus and Southsea will be improved by Portsmouth City Council.

The path runs parallel to Winston Churchill Avenue, starting from the silver Somerstown Community Hub that spans the road, continuing behind the Castle Tavern Pub, to the junction with Somers Road.

Changes will include extra lighting, CCTV, wider pathways and tree planting, to make the route more accessible, safer and a more pleasant experience for walking and cycling.

Bushes along the route have already been cut back to make it more open.

The works are due to begin from Monday 26 February, and students will need to use a temporary diversion along River's Street for around 6 weeks.

Find out more about the changes on the Council’s website.
