We are asking for your views on how the University can widen participation in higher education and support future students from every background to succeed.

Our plan to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds

We will shortly be submitting our Access and Participation Plan to the Office for Students. The Plan will set out how we will intend to improve equality of opportunity for students from disadvantaged backgrounds to access, succeed in, and progress from higher education.

The Plan looks at the student experience from admissions to employment after graduation, and considers where there might be disadvantages for particular groups of students.

For example, we know that people who have previously been eligible for free school meals are less likely to come to university and that, when they do, they don’t always achieve outcomes as good as those from other backgrounds.
