A new temporary location has been found for the Students’ Union while our new Student Hub is being built.
We know how important it is for you to have the best possible experience with access to high-quality facilities during your time here.
Plans to transform the existing Students’ Union (SU) Building into a new and thriving student social hub are progressing well. We want to ensure you are not negatively impacted by the planned temporary closure of the SU Building and so it was crucial we secured suitable, alternative space to relocate the existing student union services into one location.
We have explored all the options and can confirm that the neighbouring LSI building (1-13 Lord Montgomery Way) will be available as a temporary home for our Students’ Union during the construction phase. The building will provide a central space for approximately two years, enabling you to continue to collaborate together in a dedicated space.
We are grateful for your feedback which has helped shape this solution. We understand how important it is to have a place to socialise, relax and for Societies to thrive. The LSI building is well-located and will support your student experience while work is underway to build an even better social and learning environment.
Due to the various requirements of the Students’ Union building, and the importance of providing one shared space that is centrally located, the LSI building provides an ideal solution.
The ground floor to the fourth floor of the LSI building will be designed to provide the facilities found in the existing SU Building including a shop, event space, meeting rooms and storage facilities. The language school will continue to operate on the fifth floor to the eighth floor with no disruption to their services.
It is anticipated that the Students’ Union will move into the new re-developed location by November 2024, and will remain there until the new Student Hub is completed, scheduled for Autumn 2025. We’ll be working closely with the SU and Societies to ensure a smooth transition into your new home.
Once the Students’ Union moves back to its new and improved permanent home, the LSI building will provide a flexible space that we can use as other campus development projects progress.
We appreciate that students, in particular Societies, may have some immediate questions. The Students’ Union have set up a form so you can submit your questions and we will work with the UPSU to address these.
