Being estranged from your family means not having the privilege of support from your parents to be at university - whether that be financial, emotional, or physical. This anonymous students shares their words of wisdom for others who are at university in similar circumstances.

Hey Gurl,

Just wanted to let you know what it was like being an estranged student at uni.

Not going to lie its been lonely at times and somewhat overwhelming especially when you don’t have financial help. I feel like many people take for granted the financial help they get from their parents and having to fend for myself has not been easy at all.

Tackling my 20s and life issues on top of being a student has been at times challenging. Having parents who are willing to provide a safe space mentally and financially is so crucial to having a smooth sailing uni experience and I mean that with every part of my being, TRUST ME!

Redoing my third year proved some challenges financially and mentally. Due to some personal circumstances this has often times led me to not knowing who to turn to. Thankfully I found the Uni wellbeing service and the finance team, who I would highly recommend if you are going through a rough patch.

The Covid period was not great, was really difficult especially as my course Architecture is a collaborative course and just missed my friends and peers. Isolation impacted me so much as I am such an extrovert. Keeping up with study was not fun because I felt alone and didn't have much point of contact.

Awareness of estrangement is next to zero in general because it isn't talked about enough and we don't realize how much relying on our parents for help is important. Especially as a young adult, I have found it tough.

Having to sort out housing issues and financial means was difficult. I have used both the wellbeing and bursary service as a point of contact, which I didn’t believe would be helpful but they have been so supportive and have received this kind of support from an educational institution in my years of formal education. They really have people who care about their job and check in on you, so anyone facing issues will be in good hands.

Gurl I hope this helps, trust you'll be okay just be willing to receive support, especially in your final year of uni.
