

Automatic External Defibrillators (AED)
AED guidance and locations across the campus.
The University has many public access AEDs distributes around the University. This initiative is part of the University's commitment to the health and welfare of its staff and students, as well as being a socially responsible organisation.
What is an AED?
An AED is a device which enables the general public to attempt to restart a heart after a cardiac arrest. They are designed to be simple to operate as the device has a computer programme which will read the heart rhythm and only discharges automatically if it is correct to use a shock in that circumstance.

AEDs are also located on three University Security vehicles and the Health Safety and Compliance Team have a portable AED that can be booked to take onto field trips. If you wish to book or find out more information on this, please contact hsservicedesk@port.ac.uk, or call ext. 3075.
The types of AED installed around the University campus are suitable for any person to use. Audio instruction is given by the equipment at every stage. They do not require any training, however University first aiders are provided with training in the use of AEDs to provide familiarity and confidence if required to use them.
