How to survey students

How University students and staff can request a research survey

If you wish to survey students at the University, you may have to submit a request to the Student Survey Research Group.

University students and staff who wish to survey the student population for research or service evaluation, where the sample size exceeds 250 and/or is taken from more than one department or school, needs the permission of the Student Survey Request Group to do so.

You should also be aware that favourable ethical opinion may be needed from the relevant Ethics Committee to run a student survey. Permissions for a student survey can be submitted to both the Ethics Committee and the Student Survey Request Group at the same time.

The role of the Student Survey Request Group is to ensure that all student survey proposals, consider the following:

  • ethical issues and data protection
  • evaluation and dissemination of the survey results
  • scheduling of the survey - at the most appropriate time for students and the University.

The process is simple, and the group usually reviews and responds to requests quickly.

The Student Survey Request site provides information on how to prepare and submit a request. The site also includes a link to the request form, the timeframe for submitting requests (requests will be considered twice per month), survey review criteria, and advice to ensure the request is successful.
