Control of Artificial Radiation (Laser Safety)
Ensuring the safe usage of artificial radiation such as lasers throughout the University.
Introduction
Artificial optical radiation sources are man-made light sources that are installed in many items of equipment, including lasers, broadband optical sources and equipment producing ultraviolet (UV-R) and Infrared (IR) radiation such as UV lights, radiant heaters and welding equipment.
This guidance is intended to ensure that the University is compliant with current legislation and sets out procedures on how to achieve safe environments for University staff, students, contractors and visitors.
Laser Safety Arrangement and Guidance
The Laser Safety Arrangement is designed to ensure the safe purchase, installation, use and maintenance of laser equipment owned or hired by the University. Lasers are classified according to the hazard they represent and are detailed in the Technical Guidance Note below.
Laser Safety Arrangement LS02: Laser Classification LS04: Safe use of laser pointers and similar devices
For More Information
The following laser registration form should be used by departments to register new laser equipment and deregister old equipment, in accordance with the Laser Safety Arrangement.
Lasers in printers, photocopiers and CD / DVD players do not need to be registered.
Equipment containing UV-R and IR light sources can be hazardous if uncontrolled. However, they tend to be fitted in equipment where specific guarding and/or training and operating procedures are required.
These items do not require registering in the same way as laser equipment. However, if there is any doubt, please contact the Laser Safety Officer for further advice.
