Google 2-Step Verification helps keep your University Google account secure by asking you to complete an additional check when signing in. This provides extra protection if your password is ever compromised and is used to access your University Google account and files stored in Google Drive.
You will need to set up Google 2-Step Verification when you activate your University account.
Secure all your University accounts
The University uses three different security methods. Each protects different accounts and services, so setting up one does not automatically set up the others. To avoid problems accessing the systems you need for your studies, make sure you complete all three setups at the beginning of your studies or when prompted:
- Set up University MFA for services including Moodle and the University VPN.
- Microsoft MFA for Microsoft 365 services including Outlook, OneDrive and Teams.
- Set up Google 2-Step Verification for your University Google account and files stored in Google Drive.
The prompts may look different because each method protects a separate account or service.
Setting up Google 2-Step
You will need:
- Your University email address and password
- Your mobile phone
- A second device, such as a laptop or computer, on which to complete the setup
Setting up Google 2-Step Verification
- On a computer, open your Google Account and sign in with your University email address and password.
- Select Security & sign-in.
- Under How you sign in to Google, select 2-Step Verification.
- Choose an available verification method and follow the instructions on the screen.
- Complete the security check to confirm your chosen method.
Google 2-Step Verification is now set up on your University Google account.
We recommend setting up at least two verification methods so you can still access your account if your usual method is unavailable, for example if you lose your phone or change your device.
If you cannot use an authenticator app or may find app-based verification difficult, you can also use the phone number option which sends a:
- Text message (SMS): receive a one-time security code by text message to your registered phone number.
- Phone call: receive an automated phone call with your verification code. This may be helpful if you prefer voice-based authentication or have accessibility requirements
