Activate your University account

Your gateway to the University services, systems and support you’ll use throughout your studies

Your University student account is your key to the digital services you will use throughout your studies, including your University email, Moodle, Microsoft 365 and other important systems. Setting it up correctly at the start will help make sure you can access everything you need without delays.

You will need to activate your account, sign in to your University email and complete the required security checks. Follow the steps below carefully and keep your username, password and personal email details up to date.

Ready to get started?

Follow the four steps below to activate your account, access your University email and complete your sign-in security.

Activate your account, new students.

Note: Using a mobile device? Pinch to zoom in and make the image easier to read. For detailed instructions, see the Activating your student account section.

1. Find your student number

Your student number is a seven-digit number included in the application information sent to your personal email address.

You will need this number to activate your account and create your University username.

2. Activate your account

Open the Activate your account self-service portal.

Follow the instructions to confirm your details and create your University password. Your username will be up followed by your student number, for example:

up1234567

It can take approximately one hour for your account to become ready after activation.

3. Sign in to your University email

Once your account is ready, go to Outlook and sign in using your University email address and the password you created during activation.

Your email address will follow this format: [email protected]

Your University email will be used for important messages about your course, studies and University services, so make sure to check it regularly.

4. Complete your sign-in security

When you first sign in to a Microsoft service, you will be prompted to set up Microsoft MFA. Follow the instructions shown to secure your Microsoft 365 account.

You will also use University and Google services during your studies. As part of this step, complete the other two security requirements:

  • University MFA is already enabled for services such as Moodle and the University VPN. Security codes are normally sent to your personal email address, but you can set up an authenticator app if you would prefer to generate them on your phone.
  • Set up Google 2-Step Verification to securely access your University Google account and services such as Google Drive.

Complete both of these now so that you can access all the relevant systems when you need them.

⚠️ Important: Once your Microsoft account has been created, you will have up to 3 months to set up Google 2-Step Verification. After this time, you will need to contact the Service Desk for help.
