This World Mental Health Day, we're inviting our University community to listen to the voices and experiences of our students
World Mental Health Day takes place every year on 10 October and provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of mental health, wellbeing and meaningful connection.
The theme for 2026, set by the World Federation for Mental Health, is "Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change." It highlights a simple but powerful message: when people feel heard, we create the conditions for understanding, inclusion and positive change.
At the University of Portsmouth, we know that no two students experience university life in the same way. Our identities, backgrounds and personal circumstances shape how we experience higher education, the opportunities available to us, and the challenges we may face along the way.
To mark World Mental Health Day, Student Wellbeing and Student Life have launched a new podcast series featuring conversations with students from across our community. Through honest and engaging discussions, students share their experiences of university life, wellbeing, support, challenges and success.
The series includes conversations with:
-
An autistic student reflecting on navigating university.
-
An international student sharing their experience of studying far from home.
-
A student with a physical disability discussing their journey following a life-changing accident.
Each story is unique, uplifting, and genuinely inspirational.
The podcasts are not only about challenges. They are also about belonging, opportunity, determination, growth and the importance of having people who listen.
By hearing directly from students, we hope to encourage greater understanding of the realities of student life and reinforce our commitment to creating an inclusive environment where all students can thrive.
This World Mental Health Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to listen. Because support starts with being heard.
