Find out about Veronika Dimitriou BA (Hons) Media & Communication with Foundation Year student on a placement abroad as Video Content Creator at Liminal

5 minutes

I am a second year student at the University of Portsmouth and for the past six months I have been on a placement in Greece as a video content creator.

What support did you receive from the Creative Careers team?

The Creative Careers team has been supporting me in all possible ways throughout my journey, from searching for a placement to helping me with the application process and through the interview.

How many roles did you apply for?

I submitted about fifteen applications before securing my placement.

What is your advice to students when searching for placements?

One piece of advice that I would give to a second-year student searching for a placement is to apply for several kinds of placements that may specialise in different areas. Placement is your chance to explore different career paths, so don’t hesitate to apply for jobs that you have never imagined yourself doing. Even if you decide at the end of the placement that this work is not a good fit for you as a future career, it's a success because you know what you don't want to do, which brings you closer to discovering what truly motivates you.

Tells us a bit about Liminal

Liminal aims to contribute to a richer and more diverse creative industry by fostering the equal participation of all individuals in the artistic process. Liminal’s priority is promoting inclusion and equal access to arts and culture which can be accomplished with audio description, subtitling for the deaf and the hard of hearing, and sign language interpretation.

What skills are you gaining as a Video Content Creator?

As a video content creator for Liminal, I direct and edit various short films for the advertising aspect of the company, which helped me develop my skills and apply my knowledge in a work setting. Working in a professional environment helped me develop my communication skills because I was working with people from different industries to complete multiple projects that require good communication. Furthermore, the placement boosted my confidence because I got work experience in a friendly environment that provided me the opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them. This will help me to prepare for employment after graduation. Working with Liminal also helped me gain the ability to comprehend an organisation's vision and the principles that they wish to promote through the visual content that I create.

Highlights so far?

The highlight of my placement so far is that I directed and edited a short trailer about a festival that we produced. It was an important experience for me since I was able to network with plenty of people in the film production industry, and I had an extensive amount of work, which helped me learn how to manage my time more effectively.

What are your plans for the future?

This placement experience made me realise that this is the career I want to follow in the future.

In the future I would like to keep producing movies accessible to people with disabilities. It’s very important for me to keep promoting equal access to arts and culture

What would you say to a student considering a placement?

To any student considering doing a placement, I would say go for it! The experiences and skills you develop through this whole process are a valuable tool for your future career path and your personal growth in general.

Even if you decide at the end of the placement that the work is not a good fit for you as a future career, it's a success because you know what you don't want to do, which brings you closer to discovering what truly motivates you.
