International student Imran shares his time management tips for university students

3 min read

Managing coursework can feel overwhelming, especially when deadlines pile up. But, with good time management, you can stay on top of your workload without stressing out. Crafted by Imran, one of our International Student Ambassadors, here are some practical tips to help you stay organised and ace your coursework at the University of Portsmouth.

1. Create a study schedule

Start by breaking down your semester’s workload. Use a planner or calendar app to schedule your study sessions around lectures, part-time jobs, and social activities. This way, you’ll always know what’s due next and can avoid last-minute cramming.

Imran says: Set specific goals for each study session. Rather than just "study," aim to finish a section or complete a set of notes.

2. Prioritise your tasks

Not all assignments are created equal. Some require more time and effort, so it's crucial to prioritise. Rank your tasks by deadline and importance, and tackle the most pressing ones first.

Imran says: Use the Eisenhower Matrix to prioritise: focus on what’s both urgent and important, then schedule time for tasks that are important but not immediately due.

3. Break down big projects

Large assignments can feel intimidating. Break them into smaller, manageable tasks to make progress without feeling overwhelmed. For example, instead of “write essay,” your tasks could be “research topic,” “create outline,” and “write introduction.”

Imran says: Aim to complete a small part of big projects every day. Consistent progress will make the final push much easier.

4. Avoid multitasking

While it may seem efficient to juggle multiple tasks at once, multitasking can slow you down. Focus on one task at a time to improve the quality of your work and complete tasks faster.

Imran says: Use the Pomodoro Technique: work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. This helps you stay focused while avoiding burnout.

5. Use University resources

The University of Portsmouth offers a range of resources to help you manage your coursework. Whether it’s study skills workshops, time management tools on Moodle, or course-specific academic skills support, there’s plenty of support available.

Imran says: Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you’re struggling to manage your time. Tutors and advisors are there to guide you.

6. Avoid procrastination

We all procrastinate sometimes, but it’s important to recognise when it’s becoming a problem. Set yourself small, achievable tasks each day to keep the momentum going, and reward yourself for completing them.

Tip: If you’re stuck, start with the easiest task. Completing something small can give you the motivation to keep going.

7. Stay flexible

Life happens, and sometimes your plan will need to change. Leave some buffer time in your schedule for unexpected delays or personal breaks. This will help you avoid the stress of trying to catch up if something takes longer than expected.

Imran says: Review your schedule each week and adjust it based on upcoming deadlines and how well you’ve stuck to your plan.

By organising your time, breaking down tasks, and using the resources available at the University, you’ll find that managing your coursework becomes much more achievable. Remember, consistency is key — so start planning today and watch your productivity soar.
