Get started with AppsAnywhere

Get quick access to the University software you need for your course with AppsAnywhere, either campus or using a personal device

AppsAnywhere is the University’s online software portal. It gives you one place to find and open many of the specialist applications you may need for your course, without having to search for or install each application yourself.

You can use AppsAnywhere on University Windows computers and, for supported applications, on your own Windows device. The software available to you depends on your course, the device you are using and whether you are on or off campus. Some applications can be opened from anywhere, while others may require you to use a University computer or connect to the University VPN.

  9. Wait for AppsAnywhere to finish checking your device.
  10. Search for the application you need, then select Launch.

On future visits, open AppsAnywhere, sign in and wait for the available software to load. Only choose an option to always allow AppsAnywhere links when you are using your own trusted computer.

How AppsAnywhere chooses your software

When AppsAnywhere opens, it briefly checks your account and device. This is known as validation. The check helps AppsAnywhere identify:

  • The course or department linked to your account
  • Whether you are using a University or personal device
  • Your device’s operating system
  • Whether you are on or off campus

Once the check is complete, AppsAnywhere displays the applications available to you.

Some applications include Campus or VPN in their name. You must either be on campus or connected to the University VPN to use these applications.

Help with AppsAnywhere

If AppsAnywhere is not working as expected, use the guidance below to fix common problems with validation, launching software or accessing an app

Expand the sections below to view the instructions and additional information

When you open AppsAnywhere, it carries out a quick check of your device before showing the software you can use. This is called validation. It checks things such as your device, operating system and connection so AppsAnywhere can work out which applications are available to you.

If validation is successful, AppsAnywhere will finish loading and you can search for and launch software as normal.

If validation fails, you may see a message saying that your session has failed to validate, or AppsAnywhere may not show the applications you would normally expect to see. This usually means the AppsAnywhere software on your device has not started correctly, is missing or needs to be reinstalled.

Validation

  1. Close AppsAnywhere and your web browser.
  2. Reopen the browser and sign in to AppsAnywhere again.
  3. Check whether the AppsAnywhere Launcher opens when prompted.
  4. If you are using your own Windows device, search for .AppsAnywhere Client in the AppsAnywhere portal and install or reinstall it.
  5. Restart your computer, then try again.

If you are using a University computer or validation continues to fail, contact IT Support.

An application may be unavailable because of its licence or because your account, location or device does not meet its requirements.

Common reasons include:

  • The application is only available to students on a particular course
  • You need to be on campus or connected to the University VPN
  • A University-owned computer is required
  • The application does not support your operating system

To find the reason

  1. Find the application in the Unavailable category.
  2. Select More info next to the application. You can still select this when the application appears greyed out.
  3. Open the Delivery Methods tab.
  4. Open the Restrictions tab.
  5. Look for a red cross showing which requirement has not been met.

Depending on the reason shown, you can:

  • Connect to the University VPN and reopen AppsAnywhere
  • Try using a University Windows computer
  • Connect remotely to a University computer
  • Contact IT Support if you believe the application should be available to you

When contacting IT Support, include the name of the application and a screenshot of the restriction shown.
