Connect to broadband in University halls
Broadband in University halls is provided by Glide and is available through both Wi-Fi and wired connections. When you connect for the first time, you will need to create a Glide account. You will then receive a unique passkey that connects your devices to your secure halls network.
This page explains the main steps you need to get online. For help with additional devices, wired connections or connection problems, you can follow the links to Glide’s official guidance.
What you need to know
Broadband in your room
You can connect phones, tablets and computers using Wi-Fi. You can also use the network socket in your room for a wired connection.
Your Glide account
Each student should create their own Glide account. This gives you a unique passkey that you can use to connect your devices.
Keep your passkey secure
Your passkey is linked to your Glide account. Keep it somewhere safe and do not share it with other residents or visitors
Connect to halls Wi-Fi
Use the Glide_Signup network when connecting for the first time. You will create your Glide account and receive the passkey needed to join the secure Glide_Resident network.
How to connect
- Open the Wi-Fi settings on your phone, tablet or computer.
- Select Glide_Signup from the available networks.
- Open an internet browser, such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or Safari.
- You should be taken automatically to the Glide welcome page.
- Under Just moved in?, select Register.
- Enter the requested details and create your Glide account.
- When registration is complete, your unique three-word network passkey will be displayed.
- Select the copy icon or make a secure note of your passkey.
- Return to your device’s Wi-Fi settings.
- Forget or disconnect from Glide_Signup.
- Select Glide_Resident.
- Enter your passkey when prompted.
Your device should now be connected to the internet. Your passkey will also be sent to you by email and text message.
The Glide page does not appear?
Check that mobile data is turned off and that your device is connected to Glide_Signup. Open a website in your browser to try to load the registration page. Glide also advises that you may occasionally need to continue past a browser security notice when its network is redirecting you to the sign-in page.
You can use your Glide account to connect more than one device.
For phones, tablets and computers, select Glide_Resident from the available Wi-Fi networks and enter the same passkey you received when you created your account.
Some devices, such as games consoles, smart TVs and streaming devices, cannot open the Glide sign-in page. You may need to add these devices manually to your Glide account before they can connect. Glide’s official guidance explains how to do this using the device’s MAC address, which is a unique code used to identify it.
Add devices to your Glide account
A wired connection can be a great option when you want a fast, reliable connection for streaming, online gaming or other activities where stability matters.
You will need an Ethernet cable and a network port on your device. If your device does not have one, you can use a suitable Ethernet adapter.
Connect one end of the cable to your device and the other to the network socket in your room. Then open an internet browser. You should be taken to the Glide sign-in page, where you can sign in to your account or create one.
Connect using an Ethernet cable
Visitors can connect to Glide without using your personal passkey. Ask them to use the temporary visitor access option instead, which gives them their own short-term connection and helps keep your Glide account secure.
How visitors connect
- Open the Wi-Fi settings on the visitor’s device.
- Select Glide_Signup.
- Open an internet browser.
- On the Glide welcome page, select Visitor access.
- Enter the visitor’s name and email address.
- Select Connect.
Visitor access lasts for 24 hours. After this, the visitor will need to register again.
Access University services
Using Glide in halls is similar to using broadband at home. Most University websites and services can be opened normally. Some services are only available through the University network. You may need to connect to the University VPN before you can use them from halls.
Set up and use the University VPN
The University VPN provides secure access to services that are normally only available on campus.
Manage your connection with the Glide app
The Glide app gives you a quick way to manage your broadband account and get support. You can use it to:
- View connected devices
- Add devices that cannot open the registration page
- Check for known outages or maintenance
- Read support guidance
- Start a live chat or raise a support request
These features are listed in Glide’s current app guidance.
