Are you concerned about a University of Portsmouth student? Whether you're a fellow student, a member of staff, a concerned family member, or a medical professional, you can contact Student Services at the University of Portsmouth for advice and guidance.
Urgent welfare concerns
In the event that you feel a student needs support urgently, please see our urgent support information. If there is an immediate threat to life, call the emergency services - 999.
If you need support out of hours, please call the Security Lodge on (023) 9284 3333.
Non urgent welfare concerns
We offer a consultation service for anyone who is concerned about the mental health or wellbeing of a Portsmouth student.
Please fill out the form below to raise a concern.
The Student Life team will aim to respond to your report within 2 working days.
Our Student Life team will:
- Help students to navigate the support provided to University of Portsmouth students by Student Services and other University departments, and how to access support
- If appropriate, help to make referrals to relevant services
- Provide advice and signposting to external support services as appropriate.
- Discuss what support you can provide in the context of the supportive role you play with the student. As someone who knows the student, you could play an important role in helping them understand and engage with any additional support they may need.
- Help you recognise the limits of your responsibility. If you are a fellow student we will usually encourage you to book an appointment with us to make sure you are getting all the support you need.
- We will not share information about any particular student without their explicit consent to do so. The exception to this is if we have concerns about serious harm coming to a student and we need to share information with others who can contribute to keeping the student (or others students) safe.
- Record third party concerns on our confidential record system in accordance with the University’s Electronic Information Security Policy. All personal data is held in the University’s network storage, which is protected by information security systems.
Concerns about a student with a disability
The Disability Advice service receives many enquiries from third parties, but unfortunately, we can only respond to these enquiries with specific permission from our students.
Third parties can include parents, guardians, carers and siblings. In case of an emergency, the University will refer to the Student Trusted Emergency Contact procedure.
Our work must comply with data protection legislation, which, in most cases, requires us to have a student’s consent (preferably written) to disclose any information about them before being asked for it. We will accept email permission to disclose information only if received from a student’s University student email account. We will always encourage individuals to indicate who they are happy for us to contact and record this information for our use as soon as possible after registration in their accommodation.
We appreciate that this can be frustrating for anyone with concerns for a particular individual. If you have any immediate concerns about a student, please follow the advice above.
About how we share information
As part the University of Portsmouth Student Charter students are encouraged to make use of strong partnerships and support networks to achieve their personal, academic and career goals. We actively encourage students to map their support networks and to strengthen all their supportive connections.
When students are receiving support from Student Wellbeing, we work collaboratively with them to consider and make additional use of all relevant sources of support. This includes active encouragement to tell key members of their support network when they are experiencing difficulties, and to involve parents and other family members whenever relevant. We also proactively ask and encourage them to give their consent to share concerns with others who can contribute to keeping them safe.
