Welcome

Whether you're starting your Master's degree with us or returning after your first year, we're pleased to welcome you to the University. We hope you are excited to get started.

Welcome message from Professor Djamel Ait-Boudaoud, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Technology

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Faculty of Technology. I'm delighted you've chosen to study one of our Master's courses and we will endeavour to give you the best possible learning experience. You’ll soon get to know other students on your course and academic staff who will guide and support you.

We live in a rapidly changing world and despite the challenges facing our society in these unprecedented times, one thing that hasn't changed is that the learning and skills you'll gain here will remain in great demand around the world for now and in the future.

Our postgraduate students are making big differences to the world, whether it be helping to protect the environment by exploring alternative energies, building water treatment plants in developing countries, helping to keep the nation's data systems secure, or educating the next generation of maths teachers.

You have the potential to succeed on your course, to excel and make a positive difference in the world. We're here to help make this happen. I look forward to congratulating you when the time comes for you to graduate.

Staying safe on campus

We have all the appropriate measures in place to keep you safe.

We’ve invested £8 million in reopening the campus with hand sanitiser stations, temperature scanners, one-way systems, enhanced cleaning, protective screens and two Covid-19 testing sites. These safety measures give you access to Covid-safe teaching rooms, the library and other student services across campus – plus IT resources and laptops you can borrow

We’ve made some changes to teaching, following Government safety advice. Most teaching sessions will be online to start with, and any face-to-face teaching will be in small groups with social distancing measures in place.

As circumstances around the pandemic change, we may need to make further changes to courses for your safety and to comply with Government guidelines. Though it’s a fast moving situation, we'll provide you with as much notice as possible of any changes. The University and your course leader will inform you of these changes.

International and EU students

If you're joining us from overseas, find out about our International Orientation events and what you need to do during your first week.

If you can't travel to the UK, or you don't feel safe to travel, your course's first teaching block will be delivered completely online. Our International Orientation events will also be online, so you'll still be able to get involved in welcome talks and social activities, as well as meet other new students.

Meeting and working with other students

The Mechanical Engineering Moodle page contains course-related information you'll find useful throughout your studies. You can use the forum to post questions and chat with other students on the course.

All your taught modules have dedicated Moodle pages which are listed on your Moodle course page.

Welcome message by Dr Jovana Radulovic, Interim Head of the School of Mechanical and Design Engineering

Welcome to the School of Mechanical and Design Engineering.

We're delighted to welcome you on to our Master's programme. During your time here, you'll learn relevant practical and analytical skills and knowledge which will help you forge a successful career in engineering research or industry.

The School of Mechanical and Design Engineering is based in Anglesea Building. This is where you'll find lecturers' offices and where the majority of labs and practical work will take place. Your lecturers and personal tutors - as well as staff in the Technology Student Hub in Lion Gate Building - are here to help while you find your way around and settle into life as a postgraduate student.

You'll receive a lot of information during your welcome week. You'll meet your personal tutor who'll be your first point of contact for academic and student support issues. You'll also meet your course mates and have an opportunity to get involved in clubs and societies.
