University life can be exciting, rewarding and challenging. Whether you're settling into university, managing personal circumstances, experiencing difficulties that affect your studies, or simply need advice about where to find support, we're here to help.

Student success advisers provide a friendly, confidential and non-judgemental service, helping you stay engaged with your studies and connected to the support available across the University.
 

 

 

How student success advisers can help

Advisers offer guidance, support and practical advice on a wide range of issues that may affect your university experience.

Your student success adviser can help you with:

  • adjusting to university life
  • building confidence and resilience
  • wellbeing, stress and motivational difficulties
  • personal, family or social challenges
  • understanding university processes and procedures
  • attendance and engagement concerns
     
  • extenuating circumstances applications
  • finding the right support services
  • accessing financial, housing and welfare advice
  • signposting to health and wellbeing support
  • navigating challenges that may affect your studies
  • staying on track throughout your degree 
     

Support tailored to you

We understand that every student's circumstances are different.
 

One-to-one appointments

Meet with a student success adviser in a confidential and supportive environment to discuss any challenges you may be facing and explore possible solutions.

Ongoing support

If you experience longer-term difficulties, your adviser can work with you to develop strategies and connect you with the most appropriate support services.

Signposting and referrals

We can help you access specialist University support, including wellbeing, disability, financial, housing and academic services.

Advocacy and liaison

Where appropriate, we can help you communicate with other University services and support you in understanding processes and procedures.

 

 

Meeting your student success adviser

Your student success adviser will introduce themselves to you (in person or via email, or both) usually during the first week of your studies.

You don't have to meet them, but they will be available to meet face-to-face or virtually if you have any questions or need pastoral support. You can find your adviser’s details on your Student View.

Your adviser will be monitoring your attendance and engagement, and they will contact you to check up on you if your attendance falls below the required threshold.
 

When should I contact my student success adviser?

You can contact your adviser if you:

  • feel overwhelmed or stressed
  • are struggling to stay motivated
  • have concerns about attendance or engagement
  • experience personal difficulties that impact your studies
  • need help understanding University procedures
  • are worried about your academic progress
  • need advice about available support services
  • want someone to talk through a situation with

If something is affecting your university experience, they're there to listen and help. 

Helping you stay connected and thrive

Student success advisers work alongside other University student services to ensure you receive the right support at the right time.

Their aim is to help you:

  • feel connected to your university community
  • overcome barriers to success
  • build confidence and resilience
  • maintain engagement with your studies
  • understand the support available to you
  • achieve your personal and academic goals

They're there to support your success throughout your university journey.

Yes. Student success advisers can explain the process and, where appropriate, provide supporting information or guidance. 

Student success advisers focus on pastoral care, engagement and student wellbeing.

For help with academic skills, writing, assessments, revision or study strategies, you should contact the Academic Support Advisers team.

You'll be informed of your allocated student success adviser when you begin your studies and can contact them throughout your time at the University.
