Don't be afraid to open the door to help

Welfare Walkabouts take place in November, February and July between 4pm and 7pm

Three times a year, staff from the University visit our students living in halls of residence to talk about any support they may need. We call them Welfare Walkabouts.
These walkabouts happen in November, February and July between 4pm and 7pm. We'll email all residents during the week before a Welfare Walkabout takes place so you know we'll be visiting your hall soon, although we're unable to confirm the exact day or time of each visit in advance.
Welfare Walkabouts are an opportunity to connect with university staff, learn about the support available to you, and make sure you know where to turn if you ever need help.

How it works

Our Student Services department carry out the Welfare Walkabouts and it's one of the ways we want to raise awareness of the free, confidential and non-judgemental support available to all students. Whether you're looking for advice about your wellbeing, finances, academic challenges, accommodation, or simply need help finding the right service, we're here to help.

During the visit, members of staff may knock on your door to introduce themselves, answer any questions, and let you know about the support available. There's no pressure for you to take part but we encourage you to say hello and find out more about the services that could support you throughout your university journey.

Frequently asked questions

Staff of the University of Portsmouth, including academic staff, professional services and sometimes members of University Executive Board.

There's no obligation for you to answer the door, but it's a great opportunity to check in with the teams and make sure you've got all the support you might need.

The University has a wide range of support available around wellbeing, finances, academic challenges, accommodation, and careers. Or if you're not sure who to go to, we can help with that too.

You can access support through MyPort, or by contacting any of the Support Services directly.

The Welfare Walkabout takes place in university allocated halls but don't worry, you'll still have access to the University Support Services.

We'll send an email to all residents during the week before a Welfare Walkabout takes place. This is to give you advance notice that university staff will be visiting your hall. As our schedule can change, we're not always able to confirm the exact day or time we'll be at a particular residence in advance, so visits may take place on any day during the advertised walkabout period.
