All our team members are happy to help students with any questions and queries they may have. We have two types of team members; advisors and assistants, who offer different areas of support for students. Find out more below about the support assistants and advisors can offer.
Res Life Assistants
There are 19 assistants employed by the university to act as peer mentors to new students living in halls. They are current students in their second or third year of study. This means students can get advice and support from someone who has recently been in their position.
Our assistants can advise on a wide range of topics and direct you to the right support if needed. As well as offering advice, our assistants host a variety of social events in halls and across campus throughout the year. These events can help you settle into your new accommodation by helping you meet new people and creating a sense of community. Here are some of the assistants you may meet during your time in halls.
I applied to be a Res Life Assistant because I want to ensure students feel welcomed and involved as university can be a big change!
With Res Life we are able to offer a wide variety of support, ranging from welfare assistance to events at halls, including pet therapy, movie nights and much more.
As an international student with 5+ years’ teaching experience, I’m here to help new students settle in, whether that’s hosting events or helping you choose the right hall.
I love this role because every shift is different and fits around my course while helping students.
I’m studying Musical Theatre, and my favourite thing about Portsmouth is the freedom to live life my way.
I’m always here as a friendly ear, and if I can help even one new student feel at home, I’ll graduate happy!
Being a Res Life assistant gives me the chance to try new experiences, meet students from diverse backgrounds, and help make campus feel more comfortable. If you want to chat, hang out, or just have some fun, Res Life is here to make your university experience even better!
Res Life Advisors
Our advisors can meet with you one on one for advice sessions. They can help you navigate your new living situation and give you both practical and emotional support.
Some specific things they can help you navigate include independent living advice, communal living issues, flat mediations, and connecting with specialist support services.
Advisors can also help you integrate into the community through social events, activities and social and life skill building. Get to know some of the advisors who are here to support you.
I can support students with wellbeing, pastoral care, self-teaching, and empowerment. My goal is to continue Res Life’s mission and help students become the best version of themselves.
I have been part of the university community for over 21 years. I find great fulfilment in supporting students—especially those who may face challenges at first. I enjoy watching them grow, succeed, and build strong, positive networks around themselves.
It is a privilege to serve as a member of the Res Life team, helping to create a safe, supportive, and thriving environment for all.
