What motivated you to pursue an optional placement year?

I believe that immersing myself in a real-world professional environment will significantly enhance my understanding of the industry and solidify my career aspirations. Because the graduate job-hunting environment is so competitive, I re-considered the fact that I originally did not want to do a placement during first year and started my research in order to enhance my employability in the future.

Finally, the opportunity for personal growth through relocating to a new city was challenging yet highly appealing. Living independently in a new environment encourages me to remain resilient, independent, and adaptable, contributing to both professional and personal maturity. This experience will undoubtedly equip me with valuable life skills that extend beyond the workplace.

How many placement applications did you make?

My placement search was remarkably concise, involving applications to only two companies. While fortunate to secure interviews quickly, early in the academic year, I proactively prepared my CV and applications to maximize my chances. Although my early offer prevented the need for much external support, I benefited greatly from one-on-one meetings with my personal tutor, whose guidance boosted my confidence during the assessment centre stage.

What were your main concerns about taking a placement year?

Initially, I was apprehensive about extending my university experience by a year through a placement, primarily due to financial concerns stemming from my usual commuter student status. Careful financial planning and budgeting significantly alleviated these anxieties. Furthermore, having never lived away from home, I was uncertain about adapting to life in London. However, after six months, I've grown to love the city, my housemates, and the overall experience, and I now aspire to return after graduation.

Highlights so far?

Among the highlights of my placement are several opportunities to contribute to influencer events, which have provided valuable insights and showcased my proactive approach. Furthermore, the meaningful relationships I've cultivated with colleagues are deeply rewarding, and their positive feedback reinforces my sense of accomplishment and belonging within the team.

Would you recommend the placement year to other students?

I wholeheartedly recommend a placement year to any student who has the opportunity. In today's competitive job market, a year of industry experience is invaluable, providing a significant advantage in the application process. Moreover, it sets realistic expectations about your chosen field and the realities of full-time work, allowing for informed career decisions and a smoother transition into professional life. My best piece of advice is to be really proactive on submitting applications and to always remain your authentic self during the application process to let your unique personality shine!
