Find out about Hildie Bowden LLB (Hons) Law with Legal Practice student on placement as Information Assistant with the Careers and Employability Service at the University of Portsmouth
What motivated you to pursue an optional placement year?
The prospect of acquiring valuable skills for the professional workplace motivated me to pursue an optional placement. On a personal level, I sought a break from my studies to prevent burnout and ensure that I would enter my final year with renewed motivation and focus.
So far, my placement has been instrumental in rebuilding the confidence I had lost during my second year, and I now feel well-equipped to approach my final year with renewed energy and determination.
How many placement applications did you make?
I found the process challenging, as I had to balance my academic responsibilities with the numerous application requirements. Additionally, I felt considerable pressure from those around me to secure a placement.
Prior to my interview, I met with the placement team, and I also had my CV reviewed by the Careers and Employability service. The session with Careers was particularly valuable and played a key role in helping me successfully secure my placement.
What were your main concerns about taking a placement year?
My primary concerns about undertaking a placement included housing, taking a break from my studies, adjusting to a new social dynamic in my final year, and establishing a new routine.
What tips would you give to students about balancing placement applications with university studies?
I would advise applying only for placements that genuinely interest you and are realistically commutable from your chosen place of residence. Additionally, starting the application process early provides more time to explore opportunities before academic commitments become overwhelming.
What has been the most rewarding part of your placement so far?
The most rewarding aspect of my placement to date has been the period when I served as the sole Information Assistant. I believe this experience significantly contributed to the development of many of the new skills I have acquired during my placement. As a result, I have gained increased confidence, enhanced digital literacy, and developed a systematic approach to task management.
Has your placement year influenced your future career path?
The placement within this service has helped me recognise the many benefits of working in a collaborative team environment in a busy office environment where I have experienced a variety of valuable opportunities. I still have a strong interest in pursuing a career in law, and this placement has equipped me with valuable workplace skills that will support my career development. Additionally, I know that should I need further guidance in the future, I can always return to the careers service, as the environment is both welcoming and supportive.
Would you recommend the placement year to other students?
I highly recommend undertaking a placement in your third year, as it provides an opportunity to develop essential skills required for the professional workplace. Additionally, it can significantly boost your confidence and help you transition more smoothly into your final year.
