What motivated you to pursue an optional placement year?

Having learnt about psychological theories in lectures, I was always intrigued by the complexities of mental health and immersing myself in work that changes lives. The opportunity to enter the domain of clinical psychology and witness the impact of compassionate care felt like a calling. The idea of contributing to someone's healing journey appeared humbling and inspiring. I am currently on placement with Oxford University Hospitals, NHS Foundation Trust, working as an Assistant Psychologist in Major Trauma and Staff support, and it is the most rewarding time of my life.

How many placement applications did you make?

Applying for placements was like navigating a maze. It requires persistence, a plan, and a strong cup of coffee. I applied to over 50 roles, tailoring each application carefully to address the job description and my pre-existing skills.

Did you get support with your applications?

The Careers and Employability Service helped me refine my CV and prepare for interviews by giving me the confidence to present myself authentically. Yes, rejections came, but I reminded myself that each "no" brought me closer to the right "yes."

What tips would you give to students about balancing placement applications with university studies?

Balancing applications with studies is like juggling, with good time management and determination it’s possible.

My advice would be to start early, so you’re not scrambling at the last minute. Treat applications like a module: dedicate specific time to them each week, and don’t let them consume your life.

Quality always trumps quantity, so focus on crafting thoughtful applications rather than flooding the market. Also, utilise your support systems i.e. friends, tutors, and career advisers that are all there to help. And remember, breaks are essential. Even jugglers need to rest

What were your main concerns about taking a placement year?

One of the biggest challenges has been managing the emotional weight of working with patients. Hearing their stories and witnessing their struggles can be deeply moving, but it also requires emotional resilience. I feel immensely grateful to receive weekly supervision from my experienced supervisors. Their wisdom and guidance have been invaluable, especially when challenges arise or cases feel overwhelming. Their kindness and humility are truly inspiring, and I feel fortunate to learn from such compassionate mentors.

Balancing clinical and administrative tasks has been challenging at times, but my supervisors have been instrumental in helping me navigate my workload effectively. Ultimately, being enterprising and proactive in my approach is essential, as the patient’s well-being always remains the top priority.

Any challenges have you faced during your placement, and how have you overcome them?

Adjusting to the hospital environment was both awe-inspiring and a little intimidating. The sight of teams working seamlessly to provide patient care made me feel both privileged and responsible to contribute meaningfully. What helped most was the kindness of my team, they were incredibly patient, understanding, and willing to guide me, reminding me that everyone starts somewhere.

My supervisors at OUH transformed what could have been an overwhelming transition into the most meaningful experience of my life. Their warmth and unwavering support created an environment where I felt truly valued and encouraged. Their ability to tune into unspoken emotions, respond with such precision, and create a space of safety and healing felt like witnessing art.

What has been the most rewarding part of your placement so far?

The most heart warming moments come from seeing patients make progress, no matter how small. One such instance was with a patient who required a translator to fully understand their diagnosis. Due to the language barrier, they had been unable to access the necessary information about their diagnosis and treatment plans. Being a bilingual individual, my supervisor trusted me to translate for this patient. The experience helped me understand the power of strong therapeutic relationships and also reinforced the value of cultural sensitivity and adaptability in providing compassionate care. After a few sessions, they said they felt immensely supported by us and are hopeful about their future for the first time in years.

Knowing I played even a small role in their healing journey was profoundly humbling, a reminder of the privilege this role brings. Hearing my supervisor tell me, “Your linguistic abilities are a gift,” is a moment I’ll carry with me forever. It’s these experiences that reaffirm why I chose this field and why being a part of someone’s path toward healing is truly unparalleled.

Has your placement experience influenced your perspective on your chosen career path or field of study?

This placement has absolutely cemented my commitment to clinical psychology and given me a deeper appreciation for its complexities. It’s shown me that while the work is demanding, it’s also deeply fulfilling. I’ve also learned the importance of balancing empathy with professionalism and the critical role of teamwork in providing holistic care.

This experience has reaffirmed my goal of becoming a clinical psychologist and taught me that every interaction, no matter how small, has the potential to make a difference.

Would you recommend the placement year to other students?

Without hesitation, yes! A placement year is an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and truly immerse yourself in your chosen field.

My advice? Embrace every moment, even the tough ones—they are where the growth happens. Be open to learning from everyone around you, from patients to seasoned professionals. And don’t forget to take care of yourself.

This year isn’t just about developing your career—it’s about discovering your capacity to make a meaningful impact, which is worth every effort. This experience has left me with no words to fully capture its depth and impact, I am beyond grateful. I am ready to embrace every opportunity to learn, grow, and pour my heart into making a difference in the lives of others through psychology.
