Discover student-created lions on campus as part of the Portsmouth 100 celebrations
The Pride of Portsmouth Lions Trail has officially launched, giving you the chance to explore a vibrant art trail across the city, celebrating Portsmouth’s centenary year.
45 uniquely designed lion sculptures have appeared across Portsmouth, each carefully crafted by talented artists and brought to life with the support of local sponsors to help share our city’s rich culture and community spirit.
Earlier this year, we announced that two of our students Anna Nievrova and Aumrak Shute had won our competition to design two of the University-sponsored lions. With their visions fully realised, you can see their creative work on display right here on campus.
Anna Nievrova, who studies Interior Architecture and Design, was inspired by the opportunity to contribute to a landmark celebration for the city.
I was inspired to take part in this project because it offered a unique opportunity to be involved in something large-scale and meaningful, where I could showcase my artistic skills while contributing to the celebration of Portsmouth’s 100th anniversary. I wanted my design to reflect the diversity and spirit of the city I love.
You’ll find Anna’s design named the Sea of Stories by the main entrance to Ravelin Park.

Aumrak Shute, a BA Animation student, saw the project as an opportunity to develop her skills and showcase her creativity to the wider community.
I thought the idea of displaying my artistic capabilities would be an honour in a city home to many different types of artists. It would also be a valuable chance to challenge myself creatively and continue growing and developing as a young artist.
Aumrak’s design, named Salt and Sovereignty, is situated outside Richmond Building.

More University talent featured on the trail
Anna and Aumrak are not the only members of the University community being represented on the Trail. Through the central Portsmouth City Council competition, PhD Researcher November Tan, PhD student Or Misgav and Faculty Administrative Service Centre Administrator, Ruth Hudson were selected by sponsors to bring their designs to life.
Chris Chang, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement and Student Life) said:
It is important that we were part of the Pride of Portsmouth trail as part of the Portsmouth 100 celebrations as it represents how we stand together with the other organisations as part of the One Portsmouth approach demonstrating our unity and collaboration as a city and provided the opportunities to our students and staff to showcase their creative talent on the city stage to be enjoyed by all.
You’ll find details about their designs and sponsors on the Pride of Portsmouth Website.
