Students took to Southsea beach last week to do their bit to help clean up the local environment and mark World Earth Day.

Organised by UoP Global in conjunction with the Hovercraft, the beach clean was well-attended by staff and students. In all, 17 bin bags of litter and marine debris were collected over a 2 and a half hour period.

Everyone who participated received a half price Hovertravel voucher for their efforts, and a competition was held for the most unusual find, which included 3 small religious icons, a mermaid's purse (a skate egg case), an oyster fossil and a stone with a message on it from Witterings beach.

Event organiser Hayley Wheeler, Global Student Support and Events Coordinator, said:

"The event was a great success - despite the weather first thing! It was really wonderful to have a mix of home and international students attending and the Hovercraft made us very welcome with free drinks.

"There was a shocking amount of litter and plastic on the beach, but it's so important to get involved and look after our local environment.

"We plan to organise another beach clean towards the end of summer or at the start of the next academic year".
