Students wearing red for Show Racism the Red Card

20 October 2025

Students and staff showed their colours for national Wear Red Day, organised by Show Racism the Red Card. The day symbolised our shared commitment to inclusion, respect, and equality. Values that sit at the heart of who we are as a university.

Why it matters

Racism continues to affect individuals and communities across the country, and education plays a vital role in challenging prejudice and promoting equality. Here in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, 18% of all hate crimes are reported in Portsmouth, with race remaining the largest category.

That’s why standing together matters. Wearing red was a simple but powerful act of solidarity, reminding colleagues and our students that our community stands firmly against racism in all its forms.

Continue the conversation

Our commitment to race equity doesn’t stop with one day. There are many ways we can continue making a difference:

  • Pride & Power: A Black History Month Event - join the Students' Union from 5.00pm to 11.00pm on 22 October. The vibrant celebration will honour the theme “Standing Firm in Power and Pride”. It's a chance to come together, celebrate heritage, and recognise the influence and creativity of Black culture across our community.
  • Report and Support - Please report any incident of socially unacceptable behaviour so that we can identify common issues and offer support. Bullying, harassment, prejudice, discrimination and sexual misconduct of any kind are completely unacceptable at any time.
