Wear Red Day on Friday 17 October 2025 to Show Racism the Red Card
As well as celebration and recognition, Black History Month is about taking action against racism and discrimination. The national Wear Red Day on Friday 17 October 2025, led by Show Racism the Red Card, is one way we can do that.
How to take part
Wear red: Whether it’s a t-shirt, badge, scarf or pair of socks – show your support by wearing red.
Raise awareness: You can share your photos on social media using the hashtag #WRD25UoP as well as the national hashtag #WRD25. Cards to hold up for photos, and stickers (subject to availability), can be found on the MyPort desk at University House.
Learn and reflect: Take some time to explore anti-racism resources, reflect on allyship. It’s the perfect opportunity to talk with your mates about how we can be even more inclusive in our everyday lives.
Why it matters
Racism continues to affect individuals and communities across the country, and education plays a vital role in challenging prejudice and promoting equality. Here in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, 18% of all hate crimes are reported in Portsmouth, with race remaining the largest category.
That’s why standing together matters. By taking part in Wear Red Day, we’re showing our shared commitment to inclusion, respect, and equality. Values that sit at the heart of who we are as a university. Wearing red is a simple but powerful act of solidarity, reminding fellow students that our community stands firmly against racism in all its forms.
Reporting unacceptable behaviours
We want everyone to enjoy the right to feel safe and welcome at the University of Portsmouth.
If you or someone you know is the victim of discrimination, hate crime, sexual assault, sexual harassment, bullying, any kind of harassment or if you witness this behaviour we would encourage you to report it via the Report and Support tool. The University can use the information you provide to help us understand what kinds of incidents are taking place within our community and take positive action to challenge behaviours and provide support to those impacted.
