Update (30 May 2023) Library, Students’ Union and Café Coco buildings

Thank you for your patience while our engineers work with our external supplier SSE to investigate the power supply issues to a number of our buildings. We are now able to provide you with a further update.

University Library - opening on Wednesday 31 May 8.00am

Following the installation of further generators over the weekend, final checks and testing of the power and IT are being carried out today and, unless any further issues are found, the Library will reopen fully from 8.00am on Wednesday 31 May.

Click & Collect and Returns on Tuesday 30 May

You can drop off your returned books and collect your requests at the entrance of the Library between 11.00am and 3.00pm today.

Staff will be processing your Click & Collect requests and accepting your returns. There will be no access to the building today.

Accessing Library services remotely

There is a large range of resources available online through the Library website.

Online support through the Library Chat function is also available 24/7 for anyone requiring advice during this time. Follow the link on the Library website homepage to access the service.

Other study spaces

While the Library is closed we have put in place alternative arrangements for students to be able to access study spaces and a range of library services.

Extended opening hours for Richmond and Portland buildings

To enable students to access study spaces, including PCs and loan laptops, both Richmond and Portland buildings will be open 24/7 until the Library can reopen. If you’re not familiar with these buildings, a campus map is available online. These buildings will return to their normal opening hours on Wednesday 31 May.

Student printing is available in both Richmond and Portland.

During core University hours there are also a number of social study spaces in other areas of campus open.

Students’ Union services

While the Students’ Union building is closed students can access the Union Advice Service online. Other Student Union Services will also be operating remotely today, Tuesday 30 May. Please contact hello@upsu.net to ensure you are connected to the right team with any queries that you have.

Café Coco - opening noon Tuesday 30 May until Friday 2 June

Café Coco will reopen from noon today, Tuesday 30 May. It will close on Friday 2 June to enable a refurbishment to be completed over the summer with the cafe opening again in September.

Update (26 May 2023) Library and Students' Union remain closed

Thank you for your patience while our engineers work with our external supplier SSE to investigate the power supply issues to a number of our buildings. I am now able to provide you with a further update.

Dental Academy - opening Friday 26 May
We have installed a generator and been able to bring back services within the building. I’m therefore pleased to be able to let you know that the Dental Academy will be operating as normal from Friday morning.

Patients and students have been informed.

Library and Students’ Union buildings - remaining closed until Tuesday 30 May
Unfortunately restoring power to the Library and Students’ Union buildings, which include Gun House and Café Coco, has proved more complex and these buildings will remain closed until at least Tuesday 30 May.

A power supply generator is being arranged and our Estates and IS Teams will be working throughout the weekend to install this and bring all services back online.

Additionally we are working to make the social learning spaces within the Future Technology Centre available outside of core teaching hours. If you’re not familiar with these buildings, a campus map is available online.

Student printing is available in both Richmond and Portland.

IT Helpers will also be available in Richmond and Portland until midnight on Friday 26 May.

Other study spaces
During core University hours there are also a number of social study spaces in other areas of campus open.

Accessing Library services remotely
Unfortunately we aren’t able to provide access to physical books while the Library is closed, however there is a large range of resources available online through the Library website.

Online support through the Library Chat function is also available 24/7 for anyone requiring advice during this time. Follow the link on the Library website homepage to access the service.

Students’ Union services
While the Students’ Union building is closed students can access the Union Advice Service online. Other Student Union Services will also be operating remotely on Friday 26 May. Please contact hello@upsu.net to ensure you are connected to the right team with any queries that you have.

Update (25 May 2023): Library, Students’ Union and Dental Academy buildings closed

You may be aware that we have been experiencing power supply issues in the last 24 hours that have impacted the following buildings which are currently closed:

  • Dental Academy
  • Library
  • Students’ Union Building

Our Estates Team has been working hard with our external suppliers to identify the source of the issue and fix it. Unfortunately the situation is complex and investigations are taking more time than we had originally hoped.

Given this situation, teams across the University are now working urgently to find alternative arrangements to enable staff and students to be able to access these services, in particular the library, if we are unable to restore power quickly. As part of this we are working to make the study spaces in both Richmond and Portland buildings available 24/7.

Social study spaces in other areas of campus remain open and you can find a list of these on MyPort.

You can also still access a range of learning resources and support from the Library Team online.

We're very sorry for any inconvenience these building closures are causing. We are doing all we can to reopen them as soon as possible and appreciate your patience while we work through the issues.

We will provide a more detailed update about the Library and other impacted buildings as soon as possible.

Ravelin Park Power cut to the University Library and other campus buildings

The University suffered a partial power outage on Wednesday 24 May affecting buildings in the Ravelin Park area.

The outage is due to an external issue with a Scottish and Southern Electricity (SSE) substation.

SSE engineers are now onsite and are working with university engineers to reinstate the electrical supply.

University Library facilities affected

All buildings except Ravelin Sports Centre - which has its own substation - have been affected.

The Library is currently without power (although the emergency lighting and fire alarm systems are still working) and users will be unable to use study facilities within the building. You can find a list of alternative study spaces around campus on our Studying on campus MyPort webpage.

The University Dental Academy is also currently without power.

An engineer has been called to resolve the issue and we will provide an update as soon as we can.
