The University of Portsmouth has been ranked in the top 20 in England for academic support and learning resources, according to the annual National Student Survey (NSS) published today (10 August).
It was ranked 19th of all universities in England for academic support in the NSS, and 18th for learning resources.
Portsmouth was also ranked 33rd in the country for students knowing how to access mental wellbeing support.
87 percent of students responded positively to the academic support they were receiving, 89 percent to the learning resources they had access to, and 78 percent to mental wellbeing help made available.
Portsmouth students value the way the University provides every undergraduate student with a personal tutor as their primary source of academic support throughout their course. Additional help is given through academic skills tutors, student engagement officers, learning support tutors, maths cafe, the Wellbeing and Disability teams, together with tailored support groups such as the Living Well With Autism group.
The University has also invested significantly in digital infrastructure, including 2,000 open access PCs and Macs, 3,000 teaching terminals and 800 high-spec specialist PCs across campus, plus 1,000 loanable laptops.
It has provided free access to virtual learning software, including Google Apps, Zoom, LinkedIn Learning, and given students 24/7 access to the Library during term time to access physical books, resources and study spaces.
Furthermore, there has been major investment in learning environments that simulate the workplace such as the Centre for Simulation and Health Care, Centre for Creative and Immersive Extended Reality, Dental Academy, replica Crown Court Room and Bloomberg Suite which uses the same facilities as global financial services firms.
Our excellent performance in this independent and nationally recognised survey reflects our fundamental mission to provide the very best for our students.
Professor Graham Galbraith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Portsmouth
Professor Graham Galbraith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Portsmouth, said: “Our excellent performance in this independent and nationally recognised survey reflects our fundamental mission to provide the very best for our students.
“It highlights our considerable strengths, with students particularly satisfied with academic support and learning resources. It is also reassuring to know that they feel supported when it comes to their mental wellbeing, especially during a turbulent few years, and that they know where to go to get help.
“The NSS results are a valuable source of information for prospective students and their supporters too, helping them make the right decisions about where and what to study as they take their first steps into higher education.
“It also demonstrates our continued progress towards our long-term ambition to be the top modern UK university and in the top 100 young universities in the world by the end of the decade.”
This latest ranking success follows Portsmouth reclaiming its top 50 place in this year’s Complete University Guide, where it was ranked 47th, up 22 places from 69th in last year’s league table. This position reflects a major increase in student satisfaction, confirming its commitment to ensuring that every student has a life-changing experience with the University.
It has also been named as one of the UK’s top 50 universities, according to the 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings, and ranked in the top three modern universities for research power in REF2021.

What is Clearing?
Every year, thousands of students find their ideal course in UCAS Clearing.
Clearing gives you another opportunity to find the best course for you - whether you've changed your mind, your results surprised you, or you're just starting to think about going to university this year.
Clearing could be the perfect option.
Nana
I'm really glad that I applied for clearing. It definitely paid off.
Cristina
Clearing is a process of applying to university after the deadline for applying for your uni. So if you decide to change your course or to change your university, clearing is how you can get into those universities.
Jess
I had originally applied to Portsmouth to do Sociology with Criminology, and then decided the course probably wasn't for me. So very, very last minute I decided in the summer that I wanted to switch courses and I found International Development and then it was too late to change through the normal application process, so I decided, well, the only option was to go through clearing.
Nana
It was very nerve-wracking. I was afraid that I'd end up with nothing. However, that definitely wasn't the case and there was so much support and information online that was given to me. So it was quite straightforward. It wasn't difficult or scary at all.
Jess
It was surprisingly super, super easy. I was put in touch with my course leader and it was all sorted within the hour, basically, after results.
Senura
The first thing I would say to somebody applying for clearing is, don't panic.
Fatima
Keep positive and less worried when applying to the clearing process.
Jess
It's actually very quick and very easy.
Cristina
Literally, the whole process of clearing took me less than 24 hours.
Max
Whether it's enrolling you to a course that you wanted or even just providing information for you, the clearing team will always have your back.
Nana
I definitely recommend anyone that's worried to just go with their instinct and do it.
Max
I'm really happy with the choice I've made. Things don't go according to plan on purpose and it happens for the best.
Fatima
I felt relieved knowing I’d gotten what I wanted and my dream was about to come true.
