Portsmouth Football Club have won the Checkatrade Trophy at Wembley Stadium in front of 85,021 fans – the competition's biggest crowd.

Pompey beat Sunderland on penalties after the dramatic game finished 2-2 after extra time – with the University of Portsmouth branded on the front of their shirts as the club's main sponsor.

Around 40,000 Pompey fans travelled up to London for the final, which was the second highest attended football match in Europe this weekend, beaten only by Barcelona's derby match against Espanyol.

The University's sponsorship is part of a three-year deal as the Club's Main Partner, building on our successful year as their Official Education Sponsor, with joined-up research, work opportunities for University students and outreach to inspire children at local schools and colleges.

Vice-Chancellor, Graham Galbraith, said: "Congratulations to Portsmouth FC – an amazing, competitive, and at times, very tense game. What a fantastic occasion that will live long in the memory of supporters and more widely in the City. The club has such passionate supporters and I know many University colleagues and students were among the 40,000 fans who travelled up to Wembley. As the club's Main Partner, we're delighted that in our first year of sponsorship, the club is enjoying such success. Next up will hopefully be the playoffs for promotion, with this win surely improving team confidence for the rest of the season."
