Work has officially started on the University of Portsmouth's new Student Hub, a major project that will create a dedicated space for students at the heart of campus.

The project includes the refurbishment of the existing Student Centre and the creation of a new connecting space linking together with the Library building. The new Hub will bring together student support and wellbeing services, social spaces, study areas and Students' Union facilities in one place, making it easier to access the help, resources and communities that support student life.

A new events and social space will give opportunities for societies and groups to host activities and get togethers while other features include a student lounge, wellbeing consultation spaces, society and community spaces, and a Students' Union shop. The Students' Union will be based within the Hub, providing access to student representation, advice services, societies, volunteering opportunities and a programme of events and activities.

To mark the start of construction, University leaders, Students' Union representatives and project partners recently came together for a ground-breaking ceremony at the site in Ravelin Park.

You may have already noticed the site hoardings around the development area. These feature information about the project, visualisations of the future building and QR codes linking to further details on the Estate Masterplan website, giving a glimpse of what the completed Hub will look like.

The original Student Centre, formerly known as Cambridge Building was home to the Department of Surveying before becoming the Students’ Union in the early 2000s. On 21 September 2002 the new Student Centre officially opened including a connecting bridge to Gun House.

The Student Hub is expected to open in spring 2028 and forms a key part of the University's £250 million Estate Masterplan, which is investing in facilities that enhance the student experience.
