The University’s new sports centre has won the Public Sector Project: Design Stage Award at the BREEAM Awards 2020. This prestigious award recognises the most innovatively sustainable projects of the last 12 months.
Building work on the site is progressing well - the steel frame has started going up, giving a real sense of the scale and size of this outstanding state of the art facility. The underground car park has been formed and the base of the ground floor above, which will house the reception, 175 station fitness suite and dry changing areas, is in progress. The swimming pool has also been lined with a waterproofed concrete and the pool surround concrete works are about to commence.
Students from the School of Architecture and School of Civil Engineering and Surveying have visited the building site with staff from Wates. They have seen first-hand how a construction site works, the safety processes and specialist building information software to manage a project of this magnitude.
The sports centre is due to open next year for students, staff and local residents.
