A new open-access journal dedicated to publishing student research and student projects in various branches of science has been launched by a university academic.

The journal is the idea of Dr Melvin Vopson, Senior Lecturer in Physics, and is supported by the University’s Enterprise Programme, which awarded Dr Vopson with its ‘Ideas Into Action’ enterprise award in May 2023. This award meant that Dr Vopson can ensure that students are able to make submissions to the journal free of charge, with full open access benefits for the first year.

The Emerging Minds Journal for Student Research aims to provide a platform for students from diverse science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines to showcase their work and gain recognition for their research contributions to the scientific community. Students who submit a research paper to the journal will also have the chance to win a £100 Amazon gift card for the ‘Best Paper’ award.

The journal aims to:

  • Foster a culture of scientific excellence among students by providing a platform to publish their research findings, research projects and coursework;
  • Enhance students' academic portfolios and career prospects by providing a reputable outlet for their research;
  • Encourage the dissemination of student research on a global scale;
  • Support the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills among students.

Dr Vopson said: “I am thrilled to launch the Emerging Minds Journal for Student Research, a platform that celebrates the remarkable contributions of STEM students to the scientific community. This journal signifies our commitment at the University of Portsmouth to nurture the next generation of researchers and to provide them with a voice to share their ideas and research.”

The journal aims to target not only graduate and undergraduate students engaged in research, but also to reach the faculty members who guide and support these researchers. It hopes to engage industry professionals seeking fresh perspective and potential collaborations with student researchers, and will ensure academics and researchers stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in student-led research.
