Portsmouth is hosting the national commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings this Wednesday 5 June.
Getting around the city
The city is expected to be busier than normal with visitors, so everyone is advised to leave extra time if travelling into or around Portsmouth this week.
This is especially important for students who have exams scheduled during the week and in particular on Wednesday 5 June.
Portsmouth & Southsea train station and the Park & Ride are both expected to be busy with visitors to the city, so please leave extra time to travel.
Roads and car parks on and around Southsea Common will be closed for most of this week to accommodate the infrastructure for the event. Parking will also be suspended on some streets near Rees Hall (Victoria Avenue and Pembroke Road) and Ravelin Sports Centre (Museum Road).
For all details of road closures, visit the Portsmouth City Council website.
D-Day commemorations
The 90-minute event on Southsea Common will include testimonies, musical performances, and readings. There will also be displays by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the Red Arrows. The King and Queen and the Prime Minister will be attending.
The event is ticketed, with all spaces allocated. If you don’t have a ticket, there is no public vantage point to watch the event in person - however it will be broadcast live on BBC One and iPlayer.
More details about the national commemoration events in the UK and France are available on the Government website.
Other local events to mark the anniversary include a Radio 2 concert at the Portsmouth Guildhall on 3 June, the traditional service at the D-Day Memorial Stone near Canoe Lake on 6 June, and a free Armed Forces Day event on Southsea Common on 8 June.
