Discover the lasting damage advertising causes to overconsumption and ways you can mitigate it
On Thursday 20 November, come to Portland Building 6.00pm - 8.00pm for an evening of lively discussion on how advertising shapes the way we consume, and what that means for efforts to reduce waste.
This free event invites you to rethink the cultural forces behind our consumption habits through insights from researchers, campaigners, and community organisers. Through hands-on activities you can imagine what you would like to see in public spaces, if they weren’t used for billboards advertising harmful products.
Speaking of billboards, the Billboard Dystopia, a touring installation by Adfree Cities featuring satirical art made from re-engineered electronic waste, will be present at this event. The artwork highlights how advertising encourages us to buy more than we need, contributing to the growing problem of waste. As governments and organisations look for ways to reduce single-use products and make better use of resources, campaigners say we also need to challenge the culture of overconsumption - and that means rethinking the role advertising plays in shaping our habits.
