The site of the new Technology Building where University House currently sits has had a varied history over the last two hundred years. From the late 1830s it was the Portsmouth, Portsea and Gosport Female Penitentiary, which by 1910 had evolved into the Protestant Home for Fallen and Destitute Women. From the 1920s to the 1970s, the location served as a motor coach depot for Southdown Motor Services.
In 1986, the site was transformed into Churchill House, headquarters of Portsmouth Building Society. The University acquired the property in 1991, renaming it University House as part of its transition from polytechnic to university status in 1992. Since the 19th century this site has played a role in Portsmouth's social welfare, transportation, financial, and educational development.
